The best bit for me though was the community – the forums were seriously busy with many trips being planned, phones were constantly ringing or texting, continually watching weather forecasts and rainfall radars. Then after the runs the videos came online, from sweet lines on high water to mayhem clips. The weekend just gone has to have been one of the busiest times for the Avonmore in a long time, full audience on the banks and a queue in place to run Jacksons.

If this were not enough of a change for FLUID then the addition of Steve fisher to the team is the topping on the cake. Steve is undoubtably one of the best paddlers in the world, he has represented Riot kayaks for many years but now has decided to switch to the Fluid team. In my humble opinion this shows the trust & faith he has in the innovation, design, performance and safety of the Fluid brand. I cant wait to see the new boats and demo them myself – sorry guys and gals – I WILL be the first person in these boats in Ireland (unless much silver crosses palm)

Dynamic venture will have demo stock in for late April and initially we are planning a demo day at sluice in dublin to start with. We are keen to get right across the country and WILL travel to meet you, Demo days will be arranged for all and idealy we are looking for locations where lots of people can come along for the day to try the bazooka, dope, do it now and anvil.

As someone who cant live without an Iphone (My office) I naturally looked at the apps and came across maps 3d. It gives you multiple map view options, view points, typical Iphone simplicity rotate and resize with your fingers. Track trails from start to finish with time, average speed, distance and elevation rise & fall.

The live map allows you to view the terrain from helicopter view and gives you the option of panoramic aspects. Trails are clearly marked out and very easy to follow.

For paddlers this is a cracking App. Find out where the source of rivers are and how the lie of the land affects rainfall and what rivers actually run. Put pinpoint on get ins & get out, also mark potential evac points if something went wrong.

Safety use this app to let loved ones know where you are going so if something happens they can inform emergency services what your route was and make it simpler for them to find you.

All in all a great app.

Far from being worried about the cold or put off from going out I have never fixed the freezing hands issue. Its bad when your hands are so cold you can hardly put a deck on or swivel the bevel on a carabiner. I’d tried pogies, mitts, gloves and all had pros & cons – nothing ever 100% answered the dilema.

Id tried the Salamander paws before but had similar issues as with other gloves and didnt like the grip so I tried paddle wax on the shaft of the paddle and then coated the polyurethane grip pattern on the palm and fingers with the paddle wax as well.

We started out at Trooperstown and after having walked through the water I could definately feel that it was going to be a super fresh paddle. Popped the gloves on and with the pre-bent fingers it was really easy to put the deck on. Flew down the river, made it to Jacksons and it was great not worrying about hands freezing, the grip was solid and I never felt once that it was slipping. Ran Jacksons and had a bit of disaster coming back across, the banks were frozen 15 feet up and as I walked across I had a bad slip with the boat. I managed to stop myself from going in but the boat went on, I scrambled back up the bank and made it below litte Jacksons where I saw my water logged magnum coming down and taking a big hit on the rock below the first drop. The end result was the picture you see on the title!

I took a running jump, landed on the boat and swam it into the bank. Although it was very cold initially I felt toasty warm almost straight away thanks to my Salamander otter paws, Stohlquist G-pod suit and the awesome Hiko teddy fleece top & pants.

All in all a nice run – embarressed I don’t have a better story for the dent on my boat but hey! these things happen. All sorted now – dent out with gentle persuasion from heat & water.

I’m definately sold on the Slamander gloves now and the combination with the paddle wax is awesome.
